Woodbury Interior Design Tips
You’ve looked at those bare windows for years, knowing that window treatments could add warmth and style to the room. And then there’s the fireplace: the drab, outdated focal point of the family room that’s crying out for a makeover.
“Usually projects around the home get put on the back burner because no one knows where to start, what actually needs to be done and how to prioritize those items and where to find resources,” says Marsha Anderson, owner and founder of SHASHA Interiors, a Woodbury company providing customized solutions to interior spaces.
Anderson offers some suggestions for easy ways to update your home to get the look you want, just in time for the holidays. “So often after a makeover, the homeowners ask, ‘Why did we wait so long?’” says Anderson. “Don’t wait until you’re ready to move or have an upcoming graduation party to make a few simple changes in your home. You can enjoy your new space while you’re still living there.”
Cabinet Hardware
If you have shiny brass cabinet handles and drawer pulls in the kitchen and/or bath, or if it’s been 10 years since you’ve updated the knobs, it’s time. Popular finishes are satin, antiqued brass and oil-rubbed bronze. Choose a finish and style that complements the cabinets.
Window Treatments
Consider adding a fabric in a solid color with a fun texture for added interest. Velvets and velour never seem to go out of style. A common misconception about draperies is that they’ll cover part of the view, and no one wants to do that. Rather, a valance or panels can really frame and enhance the view. There are many suitable choices of ready-made draperies on the market today, as well as custom-made window treatments. The benefit of custom is that you get exactly what you want without making compromises.
Paint Colors
Nothing says refresh more than a new coat of paint, one of the most inexpensive fixes. Selecting a paint color can be one of the most frustrating tasks; the trick is lighting. If the room has a lot of natural light, you’ll want to take your paint swatches over to the window to view them in natural light. Also, the color of the walls will reflect and be affected by other items in the room. That’s why when you admire a paint color in a store or at a friend’s, chances are that when you put it on your wall, it won’t look the same. Consulting with a professional can be a huge benefit here, saving you time and frustration.
Light Fixtures
Light fixtures can easily get overlooked until it’s time to move or one quits working. There are many exciting styles and finishes available today for a reasonable price. And when was the last time you updated the lights by your front door or the lamp post?
Dried Floral Arrangements
These tend to be dust collectors and look dormant as time passes. A new floral arrangement, whether dried, preserved, or fresh, can really have a big impact on the décor of a room.
Fireplace Surrounds
An outdated fireplace surround can look misplaced in an otherwise nicely decorated room. Various forms of slate are popular choices today. Once the materials are selected, the installation takes only a few hours. You’ll be able to have it done in time for the holidays.
