MGM Wine and Spirits
January is the perfect time to curl up by the fire with a glass of wine. My pick: full-bodied reds that are warm, cozy and perfectly pleasing. Matt Rivard, manager of MGM Wine and Spirits, offers these recommendations:
Penfolds Bin 128 Shiraz
The South Australian wine region of Coonawarra enjoys a relatively cool climate, and the profile of Shiraz from this region differs markedly from that produced from the Barossa. Bin 128 is inherently rich in style, exhibiting a blend of peppery spice and red fruits, and despite the fact that it can be an earlier drinking style, this wine has a reputation for improving with medium-term cellaring in the right conditions. $24.99
Apothic Red
This choice reveals intense fruit aromas and flavors of rhubarb and black cherry that are complemented by hints of mocha, chocolate, brown spice and vanilla. The plush, velvety mouth feel and smooth finish round out this intriguing, full-bodied red blend. $8.98
Pio Cesare Barolo
A classic Barolo, with excellent structure and harmony, mild tannins and balanced fruit. This wine is immediately approachable, but it has a very long aging potential. $55.99
Available at MGM Wine and Spirits, 1580 Woodlane Dr.
