If you’re looking for a great deal, Woodbury is definitely the place to be. Four new discount stores recently opened in Woodbury’s Tamarack and Woodbury Villages. Check out the deals...

Dollar Tree

Since its first store 25 years ago, Dollar Tree has spread across the United States, embodying what is thought of as a 'dollar store.' Stocked with treasures that cost no more than one dollar, you never know exactly what you'll find.

The Woodbury store opened in October of 2010, in a former Mattress Giant location.

Spokesperson Shelle Davis, says that Dollar Tree likes to plant itself “where middle America shops.”

Middle America can find everyday items here. Teachers enjoy a section that caters to classroom needs. Party hosts find decorations and favors. If it’s shampoo you’re looking for, the suds are abundant.

Dollar Tree also allows you to shop online for larger quantities of the same items you'd find in the store, plus fun extras like downloading craft and project sheets.

Tuesday Morning

Tuesday Morning specializes in upscale closeout merchandise. Although customers always find an ever-changing collection of discounted items, the store’s main activity centers around 10 major ‘sales events,’ held on the first Tuesday of the month.

Whenever you choose to go, you’ll find items similar to those found in better catalogs or specialty boutiques—rugs, lamps, crystal and china, luggage, luxury linens, gourmet foods, cookware or lawn furniture.

Tuesday Morning is opportunistic in its choice of locations. The exit of Office Depot left a vacant space in Woodbury Village for an extended time. Tuesday Morning relocated its Woodbury store to the space in October 2011. “We have experienced strong sales in our 12 Minnesota stores,” says Jayshaun Williams, spokesperson for the Texas-based chain of thrift stores.

Their strong sales may be due to a no-frills, warehouse-style approach in displaying merchandise. Shoppers easily get the impression that the savings are passed directly to customers.

Savers

The sixth Twin Cities Savers location was welcomed to Woodbury last September in the space left vacant by Ultimate Electronics. Savers partners with nonprofits that collect brand-name apparel, jewelry, designer shoes and accessories, housewares and furniture, and donate items to the store.

The Woodbury Savers supports programs at the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota. Tom Rue, director of operations at the foundation, says used clothing collection is a good sustainable funding source. “This important relationship helps the foundation not be dependent on state funding,” says Rue. Items are donated in the store, in area drop boxes or via curbside pickup, which can be easily arranged online.

Savers does their best to find a new home for every item that comes their way. “We are one of the largest recyclers of used goods in the world—keeping more than 500 million pounds of goods out of landfills annually,” says Savers spokesperson Sara Gaugl. The majority of items that don’t sell are sent to developing countries.

Chock-full of gently-used treasures, which sometimes sport their original price tag, Savers is a great place to give and save at the same time.

Big Lots

August of 2011 saw a big opening for Big Lots, which carries overstock merchandise for the deep-discount shopper. As the nation’s largest closeout retailer, they have a lot of power to negotiate the best deals on high-quality, brand name products that include seasonal items, housewares, toys and gifts.

The Woodbury store has 12 aisles alone of canned and packaged consumables like drinks, pasta, cookies and interesting international foods. They also carry furniture, unlike smaller Big Lots stores.

In a location where Circuit City couldn’t make a go of it, here’s hoping that deep discounts can sustain themselves—for the sake of Woodbury’s bargain hunters.
