Saint Paul Winter Carnival
The Saint Paul Winter Carnival touts itself as “The Coolest Celebration on Earth,” which is certainly true in more ways than one. Sure, you’ll be freezing your Minnesotan buns off in our state’s famed arctic climate, but the 350,000 people who visit the carnival each year will also get the chance to participate in hours of icy fun on the frozen tundra.
One reason why the Winter Carnival is so cool is because of the strong involvement of Woodburians. Resident Jacques Peulen has participated in the Vulcan Krewe and The Imperial Order of Fire and Brimstone for the past 25 years, serving as the King of Fire in 1997 and 2001. Bill O’Hearn, another former Vulcan, has been instrumental in one of the carnival’s premier events, the Minnesota State Snow Sculpting Championship, as well as devoting hundreds of hours to fundraising for nonprofit organizations, including the Woodbury Guild of the Children’s Hospital Association.
Woodbury’s own Beth Pinkey, CEO and president of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival, is excited to celebrate the 126th year of festivities. “There will be a myriad of events and attractions this year,” says Pinkey, “including the traditional ice sculptures in Rice Park, fireworks, food trucks and live music.”
