Exercise and proper nutrition can help reduce your risks for four of the five top killer diseases in the U.S. today. For healthy individuals, the following recommendations will get you on the path to better health.

1. Take a daily multivitamin. This is good health insurance policy, and a liquid vitamin is best. Cold-pressed tablets have been shown to deliver only 15-30 percent of advertised values.

2. Increase the ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 fats in your diet. Most Americans’ ratio is 1:10-25 (omega 3 to omega 6). Try for a ratio of 1:4, with at least one gram coming from fish oil. Flaxseed oil is a great source for the remainder; three to four grams total omega 3s is a good target.

3. Protein in your diet should be 20-25 percent of your calories. This has been shown to help control weight and is good for heart health. The protein amount can be as high as 35 percent for those trying to lose weight.

4. Supplement with vitamin D, strongly recommended especially for people in northern climates and people with dark skin. 800 IU is the minimum, with 2000-3000 IU preferred.
