Discover how lymphatic drainage supports wellness.

According to experts, the lymphatic system plays a vital, yet often overlooked, role in supporting the body’s immune function, fluid balance and overall wellness. Erica Rosenwinkel, certified Brazilian lymphatic drainage massage specialist and owner of Lymph Detox Spa in Woodbury, explains the treatments can help clients feel healthier, lighter and more energized while supporting a wide range of wellness goals.

What is the lymphatic system, and why is it so important to overall health and wellness? Most people were never taught about the lymphatic system, but it’s working every day to help keep them healthy. The lymphatic system is an essential network, comprised of tissues, organs, lymphatic vessels and lymph fluid. It helps protect the body, regulate excess fluids, filter lymph, carry nutrients, remove waste products and potentially harmful molecules, and absorb fats in the intestines. It also plays an important role in both the circulatory and immune systems.

What is lymphatic drainage massage, and how does it differ from a traditional massage? Lymphatic massage is very different from traditional massage. It is a specialized massage designed to encourage the movement of lymph fluid and support the lymphatic system. Traditional massage focuses on the muscular system, while lymphatic drainage uses lighter pressure, rhythmic movement and specific techniques that follow the body’s lymphatic pathways.

As a certified Brazilian lymphatic drainage massage specialist, what techniques differentiate the treatment from other approaches? Brazilian lymphatic massage differs from approaches such as manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) in both technique and intention. Originating in Brazil, it has gained popularity worldwide for its unique approach to supporting lymphatic flow while also delivering aesthetic results. The technique uses a faster pace and firmer pressure than MLD. In addition to supporting lymphatic function, it can help reduce bloating and fluid retention, creating a lighter feeling and more sculpted appearance after treatment.

What are some of the most common reasons clients seek out these treatments? Some clients come in simply out of curiosity after hearing about lymphatic drainage from friends, family or social media. Others seek general wellness benefits, including reducing excess water weight, bloating and inflammation, or simply taking time to relax and reset. Many clients come in for specific concerns that this style of massage can address, including post-surgical support, relief from perimenopause and menopause symptoms, pre- and post-travel care, and wedding preparation.

What are some of the other potential physical or wellness benefits clients report experiencing? People often leave treatment feeling lighter, more energized, deeply relaxed and refreshed. Reduced puffiness and bloating are common benefits, but clients have also reported relief from edema, constipation, chronic pain and support during recovery from injury or surgery. I’ve also worked with clients seeking support while detoxing or managing other health concerns. It’s incredible to see the variety of ways lymphatic massage can support the body and contribute to overall well-being.

What can a first-time client expect during a session, and how do you tailor treatments to individual needs and comfort levels? A first-time client can expect a full-body treatment that may include manual work, vacuum therapy, cupping and advanced red light therapy. Clients are always welcome to skip any part of the treatment depending on their comfort level. Pressure can be adjusted, and additional time can be focused on specific areas based on individual needs and preferences. We aim to create an environment where people feel safe, cared for and respected—a space where they can fully relax and focus on their well-being.
