A couple of years ago, I found out I was going to be an aunt. I immediately dove headfirst into what that looks like—spoiling my future niece or nephew with books, toys and, what I was most excited for, clothes. What can I say? I swoon for tiny baby outfits!
However, after talking to my sister, I realized I knew less than I thought about infant and child safety when it comes to materials and textiles. I knew that plastic has fallen to the wayside, and silicone and wood have taken center stage for toys and other items. What I didn’t know was that organic or OEKO-TEK-certified materials are preferred over traditional garments that are unsustainable or may contain unsafe chemicals. I’ve discovered that there are plenty of boutiques and brands that focus on better options, including Pacifier Kids Boutique in Woodbury Lakes.
Take one walk through the store, and shoppers will discover an array of adorable jumpers and onesies, books and rattles, and more. Everything is colorful and playful, yet modern and, most importantly, safe. “When we can bring in brands that prioritize safer materials, reduce waste and still make products that work really well for kids, that’s something we feel good about supporting,” says proprietor Alissa Montbriand. This issue is all about style and beauty—including for the little ones and the older children in our lives. That encompasses students in South Washington County Schools (SoWashCo) who are exploring fashion via the Family and Consumer Science program’s fashion design course. Who knows? The next big designer might just be a SoWashCo student. Read the story on page 16.
I welcome you to meet our cover star: Hailey James. The singer is making waves in the country music scene; she has won several awards from the Midwest Country Music Organization, performed with her idol, Carrie Underwood, and is working on the release of her next album. Learn all about Hailey’s journey to the stage on page 26.
Although my nephew is now 5 years old (I’m really not sure how that happened so quickly!), I still revel in spoiling him with clothes, gifts and toys—and I don’t think that will ever change! Readers, what are your favorite local children’s boutiques? I’d love to hear from you! Send me an email at hailey@localmedia.co.
I’ll see you next month,
—Hailey Almsted
