Our resident pet expert breaks down the benefits of the best dog treats.

Pet Parent Question: “Are sweets good for my dog? What are the best treats to give my dog?”

It’s Dental Month for dogs. One of the best treats for dogs is a raw bone for them to chew on. Raw (not cooked or baked) bones will take tartar off teeth and give your dog sometimes hours of enjoyment. Bad breath is a sign of serious health problems for a dog. Inflamed gums and teeth with tartar can become problematic systemically. Inflammation and infection can spread to other organs in the body. Brushing your dog’s teeth regularly with doggie toothpaste or tooth gel is also helpful. If your dog does not tolerate a toothbrush use a finger to get the toothpaste or gel on the teeth. Sprays are also available.

If your dog’s teeth and gums are healthy, you can make homemade dog treats or purchase some at a doggie bakery.
