Giving Back

In February, the Rotary Club of Woodbury hosted its annual gala to raise funds for various community initiatives. The evening at Royal Golf Club included food, drinks, music from the Lake String Quartet and comedy from John DeBoer.

May 7, 8 and 9: a weekend circled on many calendars in Woodbury. The fishing opener? Yes. Mother’s Day? Yes.

Gordie Bailey, chair of the board for Bailey Nurseries, headquartered in Newport, has always had a strong drive to give back. This February, it’s bringing him as far as northern Tanzania, where he will climb Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise money for a girls’ school in Kenya.

In 2008, Michael Lindahl kissed his wife and six kids goodbye and boarded a plane to Haiti. The Woodbury dentist was traveling to Titanyen, a rural hillside town about 25 minutes outside of Port-au-Prince, with his friend and fellow Bible study member, Jeff Gacek.

Now in its 18th year, the Gala and Auction (set for April 5) is New Life Academy’s largest fundraising event.
