An antique car and a the historic Miller Barn make for a nostalgic photo.
Each month, we feature one of the photos from our 2018 Focus on Woodbury photo contest. This month, we asked photographer Ron Long to tell us about “Miller Barn 1927 Flashback,” which took first place in our City Landmarks category.
Where did you take the photo?
I took the Miller Barn photo in September 2017, and the Model T photo in 2010 at a Lake Harriet event.
What kind of camera did you use?
A Nikon D5100 DSLR.
What’s your favorite thing about the image, or what struck you about the scene and inspired you to take it?
I’ve taken a lot of old car photos, and a lot of old barn photos. These two were a natural fit for a 1927 flashback, with the Miller Barn [having been built] in 1921-22 and the Model T Ford in 1927. I like the contrast of the rough, weathered, misty barn with the shiny black car. I imagine Mr. Miller feeling the same as he stopped for a photo on his way home from the Ford dealership in his brand-new Ford. If you look closely, you’ll see a 21st-century youngster in a green shirt peeking around the corner.
What’s your photography background?
My photography pastime is a mix of my collector car and history interests and my graphic design professional background.
